In the Susan Cooper Book Series, Dark is Rising there are six Signs - Circles quartered by a cross - items of Power - in the presense of which the Dark is powerless. A Circle of Wood, Bronze, Iron, Water, Fire, and Stone. This is a representation of the Circle of Wood. In the Book the Circle of Wood is of Rowan. While it's wood is prized for magickal objects, the Rowan tree is not native to the US and is not grown commercially even in Europe - it's native habitat. Thus it is quite rare. As Rowan was unavailable, this Circle of Wood is made of Maple which was chosen due to having some magickal properties in common with Rowan and due to having some other magickal properties that fit the personality of the Owner.
